Definition

Noun

  • The ends of a craft which extend over her waterline.

Origin

Probably earlier than the early 18th century. Likely from the Dutch word, overhangen, of the same meaning.

Comments

Fairly self-explanatory and usually refers to the bow and stern. Hence, why the dimensions of many vessels list both a waterline length and an overall length; the latter which is longer than the former.
