Definition

Noun

  1. Strands of loosely twisted thread. Usually used for making rope.
  2. A nautical story.

Origin

(First definition) Probably earlier than the 16th century. From the Anglo-Saxon word, gearn, of the same meaning. (Second definition) Probably earlier than the 18th century. Unknown derivation, but likely nautical in origin.

Comments

Regarding the second definition, it’s just another word for a sea story…some of which may have an element of truthfulness to them. In the classic sense of the phrase, “to spin a yarn.”
