(First definition) 15th century. From the Anglo-Saxon word breken, of the same meaning. (Second definition) Probably earlier than the 19th century. From the Spanish word bareca, meaning barrel.
Comments
In terms of the second definition, the cask would be used to stow drinking water for emergencies in the event of a shipwreck.
