An eyebrow over the porthole of a yacht.

Definition

Noun

  • A curved ridge over an air port or scuttle to shed water.

Origin

Probably earlier than the 18th century.

Comments

Also known as a rigol. Earlier, these used to be wood, and then metal ridges. The object was to deflect water so it wouldn’t go down the scuttle and into the vessel.
