Definition

Adjective

  • Carrying too much sail.

Origin

Probably earlier than the 19th century. A mostly British colloquialism.

Comments

This is largely said in relation to square-rigged ships. Being overhatted basically means a ship isn’t making the most efficient use of wind to propel the vessel.
