Definition

Verb

  • To pass a line through a block or fairlead.

Origin

Probably earlier than the 16th century. From the Dutch word, reven, of the same meaning.

Comments

An earlier spelling was reave, and still seen occasionally. Once a line is passed through, it’s said to be “rove through.”
