  • The delay of vessel beyond the agreed terms for delivering or accepting cargo.

Origin

Probably earlier than the 17th century. From the French word demur, meaning delay.

Comments

This is also the term for the charges assessed for the delay. This compensation can also historically apply in times of war when a vessel (or its cargo) is held as a prize but is not condemned (i.e. declared as seized contraband) by the prize court.
