Definition

Verb

  • To sink from damage or overwhelming seas.

Origin

Probably earlier than the early 17th century. From the Middle English word, foundren, and in turn from the Old French word, effondrir, meaning to engulf or sink.

Comments

This is generally related to taking on water and not sinking from other means, such as from an explosion.
