Definition

Noun

  • A type of knot that results from one end of a line being fastened to another end.

Origin

Probably earlier than the early 17th century. Derived from the Old English word benden of the same meaning.

Comments

Unless you’re aboard a sailing vessel, this word is most commonly used to refer to the type of knot or the act of tying said knot. When rowing, to “bend to your oars” means to swing the oars forward more at the beginning of the stroke.
