Definition

Noun

  • The spoke on a ship’s wheel that indicates the position of the rudder.

Origin

Probably the 17th century.

Comments

When upright, the rudder would be amidships. These were often decorated with a crown or regal emblem, hence the name. Nowadays, the king spoke is often marked by a turkshead or metal cap.
