Definition

Noun

  • Various types of nonpolar chemical substances composed of hydrocarbons.

Origin

Probably the 12th century from the Middle English word oile, and back to the Latin word oleum, from olea, and the Greek word elaia. Both are the words for olive tree.

Comments

Oil had a variety of uses on ships long before the petrochemical substance was used for fuel. Oil from animals was used as fuel for lamps, as waterpoofing for clothing, and to preserve decks and rigging.
