Definition

Noun

  • A nickname for the captain of a vessel.

Origin

14th century. From Middle Dutch, schipper, meaning the captain of a small vessel.

Comments

Sometimes the term is only used to refer to the person in command of a small craft, such as a yacht, fishing boat, or pleasure craft. Note that it’s more of a colloquial term to be used when familiarity is determined. It’s not advised to go up to any captain and just address them as skipper.
