Definition

Adjective/Verb

  • To lie or extend in a certain direction.

Origin

Probably earlier than the early 18th century. Originally from the Old English, growan, meaning to tend in a direction. Then via Middle English.

Comments

Usually refers to the direction of an anchor cable. A common question would be “How does the cable grow?” This information would be necessary for the navigator or pilot so they know where the bow of the vessel is as the anchor clears the bottom.
