Definition

Verb

  • To braid small stuff into a mat or strop for utilitarian or ornamental purposes.

Origin

Probably earlier than the 18th century. From Old French and possibly the earlier Latin word plictum, meaning to fold.

Comments

Often called plat and also pronounced the same way. It can also be used to protect a cable from chafing and wear around the hawse holes as a ship rides at anchor.
