Red duster

Definition

Noun

  • The ensign of the British and (some) Commonwealth merchant services.

Origin

Late 19th century. Unknown when the term “red duster” came into use, but definitely after it was in use with the merchant marine.

Comments

This is formerly one of three naval ensigns, but was adopted for the merchant service in 1864. When originally used as a naval ensign, it denoted the senior squadron of the fleet (when the fleet was divided into red, white, and blue squadrons).
