- A standard order given to stop work or whatever one is doing.
Origin
Probably before the 15th Century. Possibly from ancient times when galleys were rowed to the rhythm of drums and the signal to rest was given.
Comments
Another standard order that has entered common usage. Now, if only teenagers would obey when I gave the command.
