Sailor Speak of the Week – Kid



  • A small open barrel, or a large pan or pot.


Probably earlier than the 19th century. Originally from Middle Dutch, kitte, meaning jug or tankard. Then via Middle English.


Nothing too fascinating about this term. I’m not terribly familiar with it and have never heard it used before.
