Definition

Verb

  • To head a sailing craft too close to the wind so that her sails aren’t fully effective.

Origin

Probably earlier than the 18th century.

Comments

Self-explanatory. Going further means going in irons, luffing the sails, and losing the wind. Pinching may be desirable to avoid tacking.
